Bonneau du Martray Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2016

Bonneau du Martray Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru is a white Burgundy from one of the very few domaines built almost entirely around a single grand cru.

The estate is based at Pernand-Vergelesses and its vines sit high on the hill of Corton, on limestone and marl soils facing south and west. Tradition attributes the planting of white grapes on this slope to the Emperor Charlemagne, whose name the vineyard still carries. Bonneau du Martray holds one of the largest single blocks in Corton-Charlemagne and farms it biodynamically; for most of its modern history this one wine has been the domaine's reason for existing. The Chardonnay is whole bunch pressed, then fermented and matured in barrel with a restrained proportion of new oak, and the result has long been treated as a benchmark for the appellation.

This is a wine built for the cellar and rewards a decade or more of patience; serve at around 12 degrees with lobster, roast poultry or veal.
