Description
Bret Brothers Mâcon-Chardonnay Climat Les Crays is an organically grown white from a 0.4-hectare parcel in the village of Chardonnay itself.
The village of Chardonnay lies near Tournus in the northern Mâconnais, and its residents will tell you it gave the grape its name; what is certain is that the word derives from the Latin cardus, or thistle, a plant that thrives on limestone. Les Crays sits in the hamlet of Champvent, and the name comes from craie, the French for chalk, which describes the soil accurately enough: white limestone rocks scattered through clay strata. Jean-Philippe Bret notes that certified organic vineyards are hard to find in this part of Burgundy, which makes this plot of 30- to 40-year-old vines a useful find. The 2022 was vinified entirely in barrel, giving a textural white with a stony, precise palate and a fine chalky close.
Drinking now and good for four or five years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled snapper or a soft washed-rind cheese.
