Bret Brothers Mâcon-Villages Terroirs du Mâconnais 2017

Bret Brothers Mâcon-Villages Terroirs du Mâconnais is assembled from barrels of Viré-Clessé, Saint-Véran and Pouilly-Fuissé that the family judged not quite right for their named cuvées.

Mâcon-Villages covers the broad southern end of Burgundy, where Chardonnay grows on limestone, clay and marl, and it has always been an appellation built on blending. Bret Brothers, the merchant house the Bret brothers founded in 2001 beside their family domaine La Soufrandière at Vinzelles, uses it as the home for lots declassified from higher appellations: barrels from Viré-Clessé La Verchère, Saint-Véran En Combe and Pouilly-Fuissé En Carementrant that did not make the final selection. The vines behind them run from twenty-five to seventy years old, all organically farmed. The Brets pick the fruit themselves, press it in whole bunches, ferment with indigenous yeasts and raise the wine for eleven months in 228-litre barrels, none new, so the wood is a vessel rather than a flavour.

Made for drinking within about three years, with roast chicken, grilled fish or the local goat's cheeses. Serve at 10-12°C.
