Bret Brothers Mâcon-Villages Terroirs du Mâconnais 2022

Bret Brothers Mâcon-Villages Terroirs du Mâconnais is an entry-level white assembled from parcels averaging around fifty years of vine age.

Mâcon-Villages covers the rolling limestone country at the southern end of the Mâconnais, where Chardonnay accounts for almost all plantings. Jean-Guillaume and Jean-Philippe Bret work from La Soufrandière at Vinzelles, farming their own vines organically and biodynamically and buying selectively from growers they know well. This bottling blends parcels in Mâcon-Villages, Saint-Véran and Pouilly-Fuissé with the last fifty litres of each of the estate's premium biodynamic cuvées, which is an unusual way to build a wine at this price. Vine age across the assembled parcels averages around fifty years. The wine was raised for eleven months, half in tank and half in older barrels, then bottled. It is the starting point of the range rather than its showpiece, but the house signature is already clear: citrus drive, creamy texture and a mouth-watering close.

Ready on release and good drinking over the next three or four years. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, grilled prawns or a soft goat's cheese.
