Ca' d'Gal Moscato d'Asti Sant'Ilario 2021

Ca' d'Gal Sant'Ilario is a Moscato d'Asti from a single hectare of seventy-year-old vines at Cassinasco, one of the villages of the Canelli subzone.

Moscato d'Asti DOCG runs across the hills of southern Piedmont, and within it the recently ratified Canelli DOCG covers just nineteen of the fifty-two communes. Cassinasco is one of them. Moscato has been grown in this pocket around Canelli since the thirteenth century, and its chalky soils and altitude have long been regarded as the region's best for the variety. Alessandro Boido's Sant'Ilario comes from a single hectare of seventy-year-old vines on a south-facing, limestone-rich hillside some ten kilometres from the winery. The wine is made in the usual way for the style, with fermentation halted under pressure to retain natural sweetness, gentle sparkle and low alcohol, but the old vines and the site give it a restraint and a fine chalky texture rarely found here. It is a notably fine-boned example of a style too often dismissed as frivolous.

Drink young, within two or three years, with fresh peaches, a hazelnut cake or a blue cheese. Serve at 8°C.
