Camille Giroud Beaune 1er Cru Les Avaux 2023

Camille Giroud Beaune 1er Cru Les Avaux is drawn from a 0.64-hectare holding the house farms itself, forty-five-year-old vines sitting on deep clay at 240 metres.

Beaune has been home to this small merchant business since 1865, when a Swiss newcomer married into the Deschamps family trade. The first vineyard purchase came in 1993 and this east-facing plot followed. Fruit is double-sorted, fully de-stemmed and fermented on wild yeast in open tanks, then given eighteen months in barrel with fifteen to thirty per cent new wood.

Expect dark cherry and a little woodsmoke over fine, chalky tannin, with the Jurassic limestone below showing as a savoury edge. Serve at 16°C with roast duck, mushroom risotto or a plate of soft washed-rind cheese.
