Camille Giroud Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes 2016

Camille Giroud Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes is a museum release, held back in the Beaune cellars and offered now with close to a decade behind it.

The climat runs across the upper slope towards Monthelie, where topsoil thins out and limestone sits near the surface — the reason its reds are the firmest in the commune. April frost cut the 2016 season short, so volumes were small and the crop concentrated. These bottles have rested undisturbed ever since.

Age has taken the edge off the frame, leaving dried cherry, tea leaf, undergrowth and a long savoury close. Open it an hour ahead, pour at 17°C, and serve with roast duck, mushrooms or aged hard cheese.
