Description
Description
Candea Tinto is a Mencía-based Monterrei red made in collaboration with the grower Juan Jose Vilela.
Monterrei sits at the south-eastern edge of Galicia against the Portuguese border, drier and warmer than the Atlantic-facing Galician appellations, and it retains a spread of local varieties that have all but disappeared elsewhere. Candea is the label Quinta da Muradella makes with the fruit of a long-standing friend and now collaborator, Juan Jose Vilela. The wine is based on Mencía, joined by a group of other local grapes including Garnacha Tintorera, Mouratón and Arauxa, the regional name for Tempranillo, all from mature vines planted between 400 and 450 metres above sea level. Fermentations were wild and included roughly a third whole bunch. Most of the maturation was carried out in stainless steel, so the emphasis falls on freshness and juiciness rather than on oak.
Ready now and good for the next few years. Serve at 16°C, or lightly chilled, with chorizo, roast chicken or a lentil stew.
