Description

Cantina D'Arcy Dolcetto d'Alba is a low-alcohol, whole-bunch Dolcetto drawn from six rows in Barolo's Preda cru and a plot at Diano d'Alba.

Dolcetto ripens earlier than Nebbiolo and is usually given the cooler, less favoured sites in the Langhe; it makes dark, low-acid, gently tannic reds traditionally drunk young. Tom Myers, an Australian working out of Barolo, treats it more seriously than most, and admits he is still working out what he wants from the variety. His fruit comes from his own six rows in the Preda cru at Barolo, blended with a friend's vineyard at Diano d'Alba, just south of the town. For this release he made three separate ferments in pursuit of aromatic complexity: one entirely whole bunch, one entirely destemmed and one at 50 per cent whole bunch. All were spontaneous and took place in steel, after which the wine spent fourteen months in third- and fourth-use Burgundy barrels. It finished at only 12 per cent alcohol and carries far more presence than that suggests.

Drinking well now and best over the next three or four years. Try it with salumi, a mushroom risotto or roast pork, at around 16°C.
