Description
Castello di Neive Barbera d'Alba DOC is the everyday red of the Langhe hills, made by an estate far better known for its Barbaresco.
Barbera is the most widely planted dark grape of Piedmont, and in the hills around Alba it has traditionally been given the sites that Nebbiolo does not want, which is no bad thing given how well it ripens. It is naturally high in acidity and low in tannin, a combination that made it the region's daily drinking wine for centuries and, from the 1980s onward, the subject of a serious rethink as growers lowered yields and took more care in the cellar. Castello di Neive is based in the village of Neive, in the heart of the Barbaresco zone, where it farms a large holding around the castle that gives the estate its name.
Serve at about 16C, slightly cooler than a Barbaresco, with salumi, pizza, tomato-based pasta or roast pork.
