Description

Cellier Saint Benoit Chambines Ploussard is the palest and most delicate of the domaine's three Poulsard bottlings, from a horse-ploughed slope of red clay.

Les Chambines is wedged between the lieux-dits of La Rouge and Les Charots on red, chalky clay soils, and at 0.6 hectares it is Benjamin Benoit's largest holding of the variety. The slope, planted in the mid-1980s, reaches 40 degrees in places and must be ploughed by horse. It faces more to the west than his other parcels, and in most years the wine is bottled at around 10.5 to 11 per cent potential alcohol; 2022 was atypical in reaching 12. The fruit was manually destemmed, and the wine fermented spontaneously and matured in a steel vat, with no oak at any point. Ploussard, the Pupillin name for Poulsard, is thin-skinned and pale by nature, and this is the gossamer end of it: lacy red currant and pomegranate fruit with a touch of earth and something faintly animal.

At its best now and over the next few years; serve cool at 13–15°C with charcuterie, roast chicken or a plate of Morbier.
