Cellier Saint Benoit Arbois Pupillin Côte de Feule Trousseau 2023

Côte de Feule is Pupillin's most celebrated vineyard, and this is Benjamin Benoit's tiny parcel of Trousseau within it.

Arbois Pupillin is a named sub-appellation of Arbois, the Jura village whose reputation rests on Ploussard and Trousseau. Côte de Feule sits in the heart of it, on a south-facing slope at 390 metres, and functions as the village's de facto grand cru. The site was once a stone quarry, and its steep, iris-coloured Triassic soils are littered with limestone gravel. Benoit farms 0.4 hectares of old-vine Ploussard here, alongside a 0.10-hectare parcel of Trousseau. Trousseau ripens its stems more fully than Ploussard and carries more compact bunches, which allows him to ferment this cuvée entirely as whole bunches. It was raised for 12 months in used 228-litre oak barrels and bottled without filtration. Trousseau gives the darker, firmer and more structured of the two Jura reds, with a peppery, ferrous savour and fine tannin rather than weight.

Good now and for six or eight years; serve lightly cool at 15-16°C with roast chicken, charcuterie or a mushroom tart.
