Description

Courbes Raies Chardonnay comes from vines planted in 1990 on a band of fossil-rich Triassic limestone in Pupillin.

The Courbes Raies vineyard sits on calcaire à gryphées, limestone laced with the fossilised shells of ancient gryphée molluscs, with more sand in the clay here than in Benoit's La Marcette and Viandris parcels. To let the differences between sites show, the winemaking for all his Chardonnays stays essentially the same. The grapes are pressed as whole bunches straight into used 600-litre barrels, where they ferment and then spend 12 months on lees. Benoit racks the wine off its gross lees and rests it on clean lees in stainless steel for a further six months, which allows him to bottle without filtration. The barrels are topped up throughout, so this is Jura Chardonnay in the ouillé style rather than the oxidative one: layered and ripe in texture but fine-boned, with a saline close.

Drink now or cellar five to eight years; serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, scallops or a wedge of aged Comté.
