Description

This is Jura Pinot Noir made in a deliberately Burgundian register, from half a hectare in the Courbes Raies vineyard.

Benjamin Benoit trained with Charles Lachaux in Burgundy, and the influence shows in how he handles the variety. His Pinot Noir sits on the west-facing slopes of the curving Courbes Raies vineyard, on calcaire à gryphées, a fossil-heavy limestone soil; the Chardonnay from the same site occupies the north- and south-facing aspects. The vines were planted in two generations, by his father in the mid-1980s and his grandfather around 1959. As with the Trousseau cuvées, the fruit ferments as whole bunches in a large wooden tronconique vat, and the wine is then aged in 228-litre Burgundy barrels and larger 600-litre demi-muid. Benoit notes that the polished, classically Burgundian result can confound local tasters more used to the Jura's own red varieties.

Drinking well now and worth six or eight years; serve at 16°C with duck, mushroom dishes or roast veal.
