Description

Fonteneille lies on the plateau above the Côte de Feule, at the heart of the Arbois Pupillin appellation.

The lieu-dit sits between 390 and 400 metres, with rows planted north to south on silt and clay over limestone rich in gryphée fossils. Planted in 2008, these are the youngest vines on the estate, though they already give fruit of real quality. Trousseau ripens its stems more fully than Ploussard and carries more compact bunches, which lets Benjamin Benoit ferment this cuvée entirely as whole bunches. The wine was aged for 12 months in used 228-litre and 600-litre oak barrels, then bottled without filtration. Trousseau is the firmer and darker of the two traditional Jura reds, peppery and ferrous rather than heavy. Yields were so low in 2022 that the Fonteneille fruit had to be bottled together with the Côte de Feule under the Gryphées label, which makes a standalone bottling something of an occasional event.

Drink over the next six years; serve lightly cool at 15-16°C with roast chicken, smoked sausage or a mushroom tart.
