Description
La Marcette is the deepest and most powerful of Benjamin Benoit's Chardonnays, from vines his grandfather planted around seventy years ago.
Benoit farms half a hectare in La Marcette, at 335 metres in the south of Pupillin as the land runs towards Poligny. The soil is Triassic marl, a chalky clay, and the 65 to 70-year-old vines sit on the plateau of a hill directly above Les Charots and opposite the village. Despite that proximity the two wines could hardly be less alike: the sunnier Marcette parcels ripen considerably earlier and give a golden, generous style where Les Charots stays focused and chiselled. Winemaking follows the same pattern across all his Chardonnays so that site does the talking, with whole-bunch pressing to used 600-litre barrels, extended lees ageing in the ouillé manner and bottling without filtration. The result carries preserved citrus, orchard fruit, quince and camomile with a saline finish.
At its best now and over the next six years; serve at 10-12°C with rich poultry, pork in cream sauce or well-aged Comté.
