Description

La Rouge takes its name from the iron-rich red marl it grows on, south of the village of Pupillin.

The lieu-dit sits between Les Charots and Chambines on a gentle slope at 345 metres. Benjamin Benoit's parcel covers 0.14 hectares, planted in 1970, on classic Triassic red marl coloured by iron oxides, which is where the name comes from. Poulsard, known locally in Pupillin as Ploussard, is the Jura's pale, thin-skinned red: it makes wines closer in colour to a dark rosé than to most reds, with delicate red-fruit aromatics and very fine tannin. As with the Chambines cuvée, this was vinified without oak. The grapes were destemmed by hand, fermentation was spontaneous, and the wine aged in stainless steel before being bottled unfined and unfiltered after eight months in tank. The marl soils leave a gentle savoury edge and a mineral nuance that mark this parcel out from Benoit's other Ploussards.

Drink over the next four or five years, lightly chilled at 14-15°C, with charcuterie, roast poultry or a Comté tart.
