Description
Les Charots is one of the smaller lieux-dits of Pupillin, and this Chardonnay is Benjamin Benoit's most chiselled white.
Chardonnay is the Jura's most planted variety, and in Arbois Pupillin it is generally made ouille, meaning the barrels are topped up so the wine stays fresh rather than developing the oxidative, sherried character of a vin jaune. Les Charots lies between La Marcette and Champ-Berrand on a very steep slope, on orange-tinted soils rich in iron with a good deal of yellow Bajocian limestone through them. Benoit credits that limestone with the wine's more chiselled personality and its citrus and mineral edge, which contrast with the rounder, riper style of his nearby La Marcette parcel. The vines are around 30 years old and the cuvée was first made in 2021, so it is a recent addition to a range built parcel by parcel across a very small holding.
Drink now or over the next five years; serve at 10-12°C with river fish, roast chicken or a young Comté.
