Cellier Saint Benoit Arbois Pupillin Viandris Ploussard 2022

Cellier Saint Benoit Viandris Ploussard comes from the domaine's oldest Poulsard vines, now approaching 70 years of age.

Viandris lies below the hilltop village of Pupillin in the north of the appellation. The Ploussard vines, Ploussard being the Pupillin name for Poulsard, are rooted in deep grey marl from the middle Liassic on a 20 to 30 per cent gradient that Benjamin Benoit jokes is steep by Burgundian standards but mellow for the Jura; his Chardonnay sits further up the slope where there is more Bajocian limestone. Natural springs running beneath the site keep the soils humid, and that, together with the vine age and very low yields in 2022, gives the wine unusual density of flesh and tannin for the variety. It was bottled from a single 600-litre barrel. At 13.5 per cent this is a potent Poulsard, but it keeps the finesse and the ferrous, blood-orange lift the site is known for.

Drinking well now and worth keeping five years or so; serve cool at 14–16°C with cured meats, roast pork or a tomato and herb tart.
