Description
Champagne Bérêche et Fils Grand Cru Aӱ is sourced from less than a hectare of cool, high-lying parcels in Champagne's most historically esteemed village, bottled here in magnum.
Aÿ lies in the Grande Vallée de la Marne and has been prized for Pinot Noir for centuries; in 1853 Alfred de Vigny wrote that the mousse of Aÿ radiates happiness. The Bérêche family, whose base is at Ludes on the Montagne de Reims, draw this cuvée from Brise Pot and Froide-Terre at 280 metres, bordering Mutigny, where topsoil no more than thirty centimetres deep lies over dense Campanian chalk. The vines are more than forty years old. The blend is 70 per cent Pinot Noir and 30 per cent Chardonnay, fermented slowly in barrel and then aged on lees in bottle for 78 months before disgorgement with under 3 g/L dosage. The magnum will develop more slowly again.
Drinking well now with a decade or more ahead of it, this suits roast chicken, crab or charcuterie. Serve at about 8°C.
