Description
Champagne Bérêche et Fils Grand Cru Aÿ comes from less than a hectare of 50-year-old vines in the parcels of Brise Pot and Froide Terre.
Aÿ is the most historically esteemed of Champagne's villages, a Pinot Noir grand cru in the Grande Vallée de la Marne whose grapes are sought after across the region. It is generally warmer terrain, and although the Bérêche vines sit at higher, cooler altitudes they are fully exposed to the south. The brothers work under a hectare here, with vines over fifty years old, in Brise Pot and Froide Terre, where thin topsoils of no more than 30 centimetres lie over dense Campanian chalk. Pinot Noir from Froide Terre makes up the greater part of the blend, with Chardonnay from Brise Pot completing it. Both parcels were picked on the same day at 10.8% potential alcohol and in good health. Fermentation was slow and took place in barrel, the wine spent 72 months on lees, and dosage was 4 g/L.
Long lees ageing has given it depth, and it will continue to develop for a decade; serve with roast poultry, veal or mushroom dishes at about 8°C.
