Description
Bérêche's Cramant is a Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs drawn from two small plots at opposite ends of the village.
Cramant sits on the Côte des Blancs, the strip of pure chalk south of Épernay that is the reference point for Chardonnay in Champagne. Champagne Bérêche et Fils, based at Ludes in the Montagne de Reims and run by brothers Raphaël and Vincent, has built its name on small-batch, site-specific cuvées. The fruit here comes from Le Bateau in the north-east of the village and the Chemin de Châlons plot at its southern extreme, a site known for the Selosse vines alongside. Both are owned and managed by Florent and Julien Mignon, with mass-selection vines over forty years old rooted in chalk. The wine was fermented in barrel with indigenous yeasts and spent fifty-four months on lees before disgorgement, finished with a very low dosage of one gram per litre.
Drinking well now and worth keeping for several years. Serve at around 8°C with oysters, sashimi or a plate of fried whitebait.
