Champagne Bérêche et Fils Grand Cru Mailly-Champagne Blanc de Noirs is a rare independent bottling of a Grand Cru whose fruit almost always disappears into the big houses' blends.

Mailly-Champagne sits between Ludes and Verzenay on the northern face of the Montagne de Reims, where chalky subsoil and predominantly north-facing slopes give Pinot Noir a mineral cast and unusual freshness. The Bérêche brothers knew the village well, having long drawn as much as 70 per cent of their Montagne cuvée from it, and in 2011 they bought a 0.4-hectare parcel of sixty-year-old Pinot Fin vines rooted in the clay and chalk of Les Chalois; Raphaël describes the decision as the easiest of his life. It is the estate's first and most prized Grand Cru holding. The wine was vinified with indigenous yeasts in oak barrels of up to 600 litres, then spent 48 months under cork before disgorgement, with a dosage of 3 g/L.

Ready now and capable of a decade in the cellar. Serve at about 8°C with roast quail, smoked eel or a plate of jamón.
