Champagne Bérêche et Fils Grand Cru Mailly-Champagne Blanc de Noirs 2018 Disg. Jul 2023

This Blanc de Noirs comes from a single parcel of 60-year-old Pinot Fin vines in the Les Chalois vineyard at Mailly-Champagne, the estate's most prized Grand Cru.

Mailly-Champagne sits between Ludes and Verzenay on the northern flank of the Montagne de Reims, where chalky subsoils and predominantly north-facing slopes give Pinot Noir a distinctive mineral freshness rather than weight. The Bérêche brothers bought the 0.4-hectare parcel in 2011, having previously drawn as much as 70% of their Montagne cuvée from the village, and Raphaël has described the decision as the easiest of his life. The soils here are rich in clay over chalk. The wine was vinified with indigenous yeasts in oak barrels of up to 600 litres and spent 48 months under cork before disgorgement, with 3.8 g/L dosage. It is incisive and pure, running from citrus oil to stone fruit and herbal character with a distinctive aniseed note.

Ready now and capable of a decade in bottle. Serve at 8 to 10°C with roast chicken, grilled fish or mushroom dishes.
