Champagne Bérêche et Fils Grand Cru Mailly-Champagne Blanc de Noirs 2019 Disg. Jul 2024

This Blanc de Noirs comes from a 0.4-hectare parcel of sixty-year-old Pinot Fin vines in the Les Chalois vineyard at Mailly-Champagne.

Mailly-Champagne is a Grand Cru village between Ludes and Verzenay in the Montagne de Reims, where chalky subsoil and a predominance of north-facing slopes give Pinot Noir an unusual mineral freshness. The Bérêche brothers knew the village well before they owned land there, as much as seventy per cent of their Montagne cuvée having once come from it, and Raphaël Bérêche has described taking the offer of this parcel in 2011 as the easiest decision of his life. It was the estate's first Grand Cru holding and remains its most prized: old Pinot Fin vines rooted in rich clay over chalk. The wine was fermented with indigenous yeasts in oak barrels of up to 600 litres, spent forty-eight months under cork before disgorgement and was finished with 3.5 grams per litre of dosage. It is the only independent bottling of Mailly the importer has come across.

Ready now and capable of a decade in bottle. Serve at around 8°C with roast chicken, smoked trout or a mushroom tart.
