Champagne Egly-Ouriet Ambonnay Rouge Cuvée des Grands Côtés 2023

Champagne Egly-Ouriet Ambonnay Rouge Cuvée des Grands Côtés is a still red Coteaux Champenois, not a sparkling wine, made in quantities of around 200 cases a year.

Ambonnay is a grand cru village on the southern flank of the Montagne de Reims, and Egly-Ouriet's still red comes from a single parcel of 50-year-old Pinot Fin vines mid-slope there. The site lies in a slight depression that acts as a sun trap, and that, with the old vines, the clay-rich soils and very low yields, allows the fruit to reach a ripeness rarely achieved in Champagne. Yields are controlled by short pruning and a green harvest and typically finish at or below Burgundy's grand cru limits, around 35 hectolitres per hectare, with the grapes sorted berry by berry at picking. The must was fermented in barrique and the wine matured for 20 to 24 months in Dominique Laurent Tronçais casks before being bottled by hand without filtration.

Impressive young but built to improve for ten to twenty years; serve with roast duck, game birds or mushrooms at 16-18°C.
