Description
Champagne Egly-Ouriet Grand Cru V.P stands for Vieillissement Prolongé, and this release spent 84 months on lees before being disgorged in July 2024.
Egly-Ouriet farms at Ambonnay on the Montagne de Reims, and the fruit for this cuvée comes from the grand cru villages of Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay. The blend is 70 per cent Pinot Noir and 30 per cent Chardonnay, built on 2016 at 50 per cent with 2015 at 30 and 2014 at 20, and bottled in 2017. Vinification and the first period of ageing take place in oak casks, and dosage was just 1 g/L. What distinguishes the V.P from the standard Grand Cru Brut is simply time: the extended lees contact works on the power of the fruit to give a vinous, densely textured Champagne with real length, statuesque in scale but never heavy. It is a house style built on old vines, low yields and picking fully ripe.
Already showing well but worth a further few years in bottle. Serve at around 8°C with roast chicken, scallops or a plate of Comté.
