Description
Champagne Laherte Frères Blanc de Blancs Brut Nature, in a three-litre double magnum, is drawn from the family’s chalkiest, biodynamically farmed sites at Chavot and Épernay.
Laherte Frères sit in the Coteaux Sud d’Épernay, a sector better known for Meunier, so a pure Chardonnay from the house’s chalkiest parcels is something of a statement. The vineyards behind this cuvée are farmed biodynamically on soils rich in chalk and chalky clay marl, with pockets of flint and schist; the chalk drives the saline, citric line of the wine while the clay supplies fruit weight and texture. The blend covers three harvests and includes up to forty per cent reserve wine. Primary fermentation takes place in barrique, foudre and tronconique cask, and the wine spends just over two years in bottle before being disgorged by hand, as all the Laherte Champagnes are. As the name says, it is bottled with no dosage. This double magnum is based on the 2019 harvest and was disgorged in March 2021.
Ready now and, in this format, likely to hold and slowly gain for a decade. Serve at 8°C with a whole roast fish, oysters or a plate of prosciutto.
