Description
Les 7 is Laherte Frères' field blend of all seven varieties permitted in Champagne, raised in a perpetual solera begun in 2005.
Champagne is usually thought of as three grapes, but four others remain legal: Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Petit Meslier and Arbane. Aurélien Laherte planted all seven together in a single plot at Chavot, in the Coteaux Sud d'Épernay, and the wine is a genuine field blend, co-planted, picked and pressed together rather than assembled afterwards. Each year's wine is added to a perpetual reserve, so this release carries material from 2005 through to 2017 in one continuously refreshed blend. Fermentation and ageing are in old oak in the house style, and the wine is disgorged by hand with a very low dosage. It is the estate's clearest statement about the region's forgotten grapes.
Drinking well now and will develop further in bottle; serve at about 8°C with roast poultry, richer fish dishes or a hard cheese.
