Description

This is a rosé de saignée from Larmandier-Bernier, drawn from what are thought to be the oldest Pinot Noir vines in Vertus.

Vertus sits at the southern end of the Côte des Blancs, a Premier Cru village planted overwhelmingly to Chardonnay, which makes a red-grape parcel here unusual. The vineyard is more than 50 years old and co-planted with roughly 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Pinot Gris, both of which go into the wine. The grapes macerate on skins for two or three days before the juice is drawn off, giving colour, body and flavour. Saignée is now rare in Champagne, since most rosé is made by adding a little still red wine, and it demands very ripe fruit and careful handling. Fermentation is spontaneous, and since 2021 the wine has aged in large used oak casks for at least two years in the cellars.

Drink now or hold for several years. Serve at 8°C with smoked or grilled salmon, duck breast or roast quail.
