Description
Terre de Vertus is Larmandier-Bernier's best-known single-terroir Blanc de Blancs, bottled without dosage since the mid-1990s.
Vertus sits at the southern end of the Côte des Blancs, and this wine comes from a parcel on its chalky mid-slope, crossing the 1er Cru lieux-dits of Les Barillers and Les Faucherets. Sites of this kind give intensely mineral wines that recall the raciness of Le Mesnil to the north. The estate is farmed biodynamically with old vines and low yields, and the family concluded long ago that this particular terroir works best with nothing added. Fermentation is natural, roughly 60% in neutral barrique and 40% in large Stockinger casks; malolactic conversion begins spontaneously and the wine rests on its lees for nearly a year before bottling. After the second fermentation it spent a further six years in bottle before being disgorged, with no dosage.
Still young and worth holding, or drink now with air; serve at about 8°C with oysters, shellfish or roast white fish.
