Champagne Larmandier-Bernier Grand Cru Vieille Vigne du Levant is a single-vineyard Blanc de Blancs from Cramant, first released in 1998, long before single-site Champagne became fashionable.

Little has changed about the wine save the name, which was previously Vieille Vigne de Cramant and now points to Bourron du Levant, the 1960-planted vineyard that supplies most of the fruit. The balance comes from half a hectare in the neighbouring terroir of Le Fond du Bâteau, where the vines are around 85 years old. Both plots lie at the heart of Cramant’s south-east-facing slopes on the flanks of the Butte de Saran, catching the first sun of the morning, and the deep root systems of the old vines combine with the chalk to give a wine of unusual density for the village. Winemaking follows the house pattern: spontaneous fermentation and malolactic conversion, twelve months in large Stockinger barrels and no filtration, but with at least eight years on lees in bottle and a dosage of 2 g/L.

Mature and drinking now, with a decade still in front of it. Serve at 8°C with roast chicken, grilled lobster or aged Comté.
