Description
Champagne Larmandier-Bernier Latitude Blanc de Blancs is an extra brut Côte des Blancs Chardonnay from the southern side of Vertus, here in magnum.
The Latitude vineyards lie on the southern edge of Vertus at roughly the same latitude, which gives the wine its name and hints at the breadth of texture the clay-richer soils there tend to produce. Pierre Larmandier works largely with large-format casks, almost all now from Stockinger in Austria, and relies less and less on steel; alcoholic and malolactic fermentations run naturally, and there is no fining or filtration. Bottles are matured for more than two years, disgorged by hand and dosed at extra brut level — four grams per litre here — at least six months before release. This bottling is based on the 2018 harvest with 40 per cent reserve wine from a solera going back to 2004, and was disgorged in April 2020. The result is pure and mineral, with real texture and stone-fruit depth behind the chalky, citrus-driven precision the area gives as a matter of course.
Ready now and will keep for a decade. Serve at 8–10°C in a wine glass, or even decanted, with shellfish, terrine, white meats or most cheeses.
