Simply named Pinot, this is the first Blanc de Noirs from Agrapart, a house otherwise devoted to Côte des Blancs Chardonnay.

Agrapart is based at Avize and has built its name on Grand Cru Chardonnay, so a Blanc de Noirs is a genuine departure. It is very much Ambroise Agrapart's wine — he worked in Burgundy with de Montille and others, while his father Pascal was never much taken with Pinot Noir. The fruit comes from the family's small Champ Saint-Bernard vineyard at Avenay-Val-d'Or, north of Aÿ, a village well known in the days when Champagne produced still wines. The vines were planted at the end of Pascal's father's career and are now forty to fifty years old, sitting mid-slope with a south-easterly exposure on deep clay-rich soils over chalk. The wine was vinified in demi-muids with native yeast and full malolactic fermentation, aged under cork rather than crown seal, and bottled brut nature.

Dense and complex, drinking well now and good for a decade. Serve at 8 to 10°C with roast poultry, mushroom dishes or aged Comté.
