Description
Clos des Goisses is Philipponnat's walled single vineyard on the Marne at Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, and the first site in Champagne to be bottled on its own.
The clos rises steeply from the river's edge, a south-facing slope of between 30 and 45 degrees climbing from 85 to 130 metres, planted to 3.5 hectares of Pinot Noir and two hectares of Chardonnay. Extremely chalky soils, full southern exposure and the reflected warmth of the Marne make the growing season here around 1.5°C warmer than most of Champagne, which produces one of the region's most powerful and intense wines. The blend runs to roughly three-quarters Pinot Noir with the balance Chardonnay. Precise viticulture, old mass-selection vines and moderate yields underpin the current run of releases. This is Champagne that behaves like a fine white wine and is best treated as one.
It will develop for twenty years or more. Serve in a wine glass, not too cold, around 8 to 10°C, with roast chicken, game birds or hard cheeses, and do not hesitate to decant.
