Champagne Philipponnat Clos des Goisses L.V. 1997 Disg. March 2022

Champagne Philipponnat Clos des Goisses L.V. is a late-disgorged release held back on lees for a quarter of a century in the house's Caveau du Trésor.

L.V. stands for Long Vieillissement, Philipponnat's long-ageing project. It is widely accepted that Clos des Goisses, the steep south-facing walled vineyard above the Marne at Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, needs at least ten to fifteen years to show its full character, and for more than two decades the house has held back a portion of each vintage to be released over time. Late-disgorged bottles have appeared occasionally in the past, but the L.V. range now formalises an annual release alongside the current vintage. The important distinction is that the wine matured on lees for that whole period and was disgorged only shortly before release. This bottling is 66 per cent Pinot Noir and 34 per cent Chardonnay, vinified under the then chef de cave Norbert Thiébert, and it comes packaged in a solid oak box.

Drink over the next few years while the disgorgement is recent; serve at 8°C with roast chicken, veal or a mature hard cheese.
