Description
Champagne Suenen La Cocluette is a blanc de blancs from the domaine's oldest vines, planted in Oiry in 1925.
Oiry is the northernmost grand cru of the Côte des Blancs, and La Cocluette is the most northerly of Aurélien Suenen's parcels there, largely flat with a somewhat northern exposure. Vines of this age are exceptionally rare in Champagne; their roots reach deep into dense Campanian chalk and they give tiny yields of concentrated fruit, while the younger plantings on the same site go into the estate's straight Oiry Blanc de Blancs. The base wine fermented naturally and aged for nine months in one 700-litre concrete egg and one 600-litre Stockinger barrel, the same cask used each year. It then spent 60 months sur lies in bottle before disgorgement in June 2023 with 3 g/L dosage. Suenen describes the calcium-rich terroir as bringing a richer mouthfeel and a silky bead, with a finish that lengthens over time. Fewer than 2,000 bottles were produced.
Drinking now and capable of ten years or more. Serve at around 8°C with oysters, raw scallops or grilled crayfish.
