Description
Champagne Suenen La Grande Vigne is made from 0.21 hectares of ungrafted Meunier at Montigny-sur-Vesle, the only northern plot Aurélien Suenen kept when he restructured the domaine.
Suenen inherited vines scattered across the Marne and judged early on that he could not farm them all to the standard he wanted, so he sold the plots in the Vallée de la Marne and the Montagne de Reims with a single exception. That he held on to La Grande Vigne says a good deal about the site. It lies in the Massif de Saint-Thierry, where deep sandy and silty Thanetian soils, similar to those at Merfy and Gueux, meet a flat, north-westerly exposure that draws out Meunier's spicier side. The vines are 50 years old and on their own roots. The base wine was raised for 10 months in a single 600-litre demi-muid, then spent 68 months on lees before disgorgement in June 2023 with 3 g/L dosage.
Tightly wound on release and worth five years or more. Serve at around 8°C with roast pork, mushroom dishes or a plate of charcuterie.
