Champagne Suenen Oiry Grand Cru is one of the only pure Oiry blanc de blancs on the market, offered here in double magnum.

This bottling is built on the 2019 base with 45 per cent reserve wines from 2013 to 2018. It comes from just 1.5 hectares split between five parcels planted in Oiry's compact white Campanian chalk, from Le Champ Braux planted in 1955 to La Cocluette planted in 1987 and 1999, giving an average vine age of about 45 years. These vineyards lie at the base of the slope, where only a thin layer of topsoil covers hard chalk bedrock; in La Cocluette the soil is barely 50 centimetres deep. That austere chalk, combined with Suenen's low-yield approach, produces the tense, stony style the grower himself calls tonic. The base wine fermented naturally and spent nine months half in enamelled tank and half in seasoned Burgundy barrels and demi-muid, then 30 months on lees.

Drinking now and safe to cellar a decade in this format. Serve at 8°C with shellfish, tempura or a whole roast fish.
