Chartogne-Taillet Cuvée Heurtebise is a single-plot Blanc de Blancs from a windswept, directly south-facing site at Merfy.

The name translates roughly as windfall, and the strong winds that run through the vineyard are what keep it fresh despite an exposure that would otherwise ripen the fruit hard. The Chardonnay here was planted in 1972, 1985, 1986 and 2010. Soils are Thanetian sand mixed with clay over sandstone, and the plot swings between water stress and water retention depending on the season, which makes it one of the most variable sites Alexandre Chartogne farms and one that demands a different approach each year. The same variability carries into the cellar: wines from Heurtebise respond strongly to intervention, particularly to time in oak, so the handling is deliberately cautious. Crystalline minerality and marked tension are constants regardless of the vintage. Dosage is four grams per litre. Production is small and the cuvée has become one of the most sought-after grower Champagnes.

Drinking well now and holding for six to eight years. Serve at about 8°C with oysters, sashimi or a delicate white fish.
