Description

Cuvée Heurtebise is a single-parcel Champagne from Chartogne-Taillet, drawn from 1.67 hectares in the village of Merfy and disgorged in February 2024.

Alexandre Chartogne farms in Merfy, north-west of Reims, an area outside the classic heart of Champagne that he has spent his career mapping plot by plot. Heurtebise is planted 83% to Chardonnay, in stages between 1972 and 2010, on a windy plateau with a sunny southern aspect; the name translates roughly as windfall, and the exposure to wind moderates conditions that would otherwise run warm. Soils are Thanetian sands mixed with clay over sandstone, and the plot swings between water stress and excess, making it one of the most variable sites in the range and one that demands a different approach each season. Chartogne notes that these wines absorb cellar influence more readily than their neighbours, so the wine spends up to 18 months in 228-litre casks before secondary fermentation. Dosage is 2.4 g/L.

Ready now and worth holding five years or more; serve at about 8°C with grilled fish, roast chicken or a wedge of comté.
