Chartogne-Taillet Cuvée Sainte Anne is the estate’s house blend, named for the patron saint of Merfy and drawn from mature parcels in Merfy and Saint-Thierry.

Merfy lies in the Massif de Saint-Thierry, a small district north-west of Reims that sat outside the fashionable heart of Champagne for most of the twentieth century and is now watched closely because of what Alexandre Chartogne has done there. The soils are a mix of sand and limestone, unusually varied from plot to plot, and it is that variation the estate works to preserve: each parcel is vinified separately before blending, so that site expression rather than house style leads. The wine is equal parts Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Ageing takes place in old oak casks of several sizes — 228, 350 and 2000 litres — with a small proportion in stainless steel. Reserve wine accounts for close to half the blend, and the dosage is around 4.7 g/L, low enough to leave the fruit and the chalk exposed.

Ready now and good for four or five years. Serve at about 8°C as an aperitif, or with oysters, tempura prawns or a mild washed-rind cheese.
