Description

Chartogne-Taillet Les Couarres is a single-vineyard Champagne from a gently sloping site in the village of Merfy, north-west of Reims.

Merfy sits in the Massif de Saint-Thierry, a corner of Champagne outside the more famous districts, where Alexandre Chartogne has spent two decades mapping his family's parcels and vinifying them separately. Les Couarres faces south on soils rich in tuffeau and clay, and the family farms just under four hectares of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay there, the oldest vines now well over 50 years. This bottling is 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir. Chartogne describes the wines from Les Couarres as the laziest of his range, in that they ask for very little in the cellar; from pressing through maturation in used barriques and concrete eggs, the wine is kept away from oxygen. The site is known for round texture framed by firm acidity, and for ageing well. Dosage is 2.5 g/L. This bottle was disgorged in April 2023.

Drinking now and worth cellaring for five years or more; serve with roast chicken, scallops or a mushroom tart at about 8°C.
