Château Bastor Lamontagne, 2ème G.C.C, 1855 Sauternes 375mL 2022

Château Bastor Lamontagne, 2ème G.C.C, 1855 Sauternes is a botrytised sweet white from one of the larger and longer established properties of the Sauternes appellation.

Sauternes owes its existence to a quirk of geography. The cold, spring-fed Ciron meets the warmer Garonne here, and the autumn mists that result encourage Botrytis cinerea, the noble rot that shrivels ripe berries and concentrates both sugar and acidity. Picking is done by hand in successive passes through the vineyard, often over several weeks, taking only the berries that have reached the right state, so yields are famously small. Sémillon carries the blend, with Sauvignon Blanc alongside it, and the wine is fermented and matured in oak. Bastor Lamontagne has long had a reputation for offering the character of the appellation at a gentler price than its classified neighbours.

Served well chilled, it suits foie gras, blue cheese and fruit tarts. Cellaring here is counted in decades.
