Description
Château Beau-Séjour Bécot is a Premier Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Émilion, sitting on the limestone plateau just west of the town walls.
The vineyard occupies some of the best ground in the appellation, a continuous block on the plateau where the topsoil is thin and the roots run into hard limestone; former quarries beneath the property now serve as cellars. The Bécot family bought the estate in 1969. In the 1986 revision it was demoted from the first rank of the classification, in part because neighbouring parcels had been absorbed into it, and it regained Premier Grand Cru Classé status in 1996, a reversal that remains one of the better known episodes in the history of the Saint-Émilion list. Merlot leads the blend, with Cabernet Franc and a little Cabernet Sauvignon.
Good with roast lamb, beef and mushroom dishes; decant young bottles, as the wine holds well for fifteen years or more.
