Château Bellefont-Belcier Grand Cru Classé 2022

Château Bellefont-Belcier Grand Cru Classé comes from the run of south-facing slopes on the eastern side of Saint-Émilion, below the limestone plateau.

The vineyard keeps distinguished company, with Larcis Ducasse and Tertre Roteboeuf as neighbours on the same stretch of côte, where the southerly aspect aids ripening and the soils change from limestone at the top of the slope through clay to sandier ground at the foot. Merlot is the mainstay, supported by Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon, with the fruit picked by hand. Bellefont-Belcier holds Grand Cru Classé rank in the Saint-Émilion classification, and the property has seen sustained investment in both vineyard and cellar over the past two decades. Production remains modest and the wine is less widely seen than those of its better known neighbours.

A good partner for roast beef, duck or mushroom dishes, and one that repays a decade in the cellar; decant younger bottles.
