Description
Château Beychevelle, 4ème G.C.C is a Fourth Growth of Saint-Julien and the owner of one of the most recognisable labels in Bordeaux.
The griffin-prowed ship on that label refers to the story behind the name: the estate once belonged to the Duc d'Épernon, Grand Admiral of France, and passing vessels were said to lower their sails, baisse voile, in salute, a phrase worn down over time into Beychevelle. The vineyard lies on gravel banks in the southern part of Saint-Julien, close to the Gironde, where the deep stones drain freely and warm early in the season. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend with Merlot and a little Petit Verdot, and the wine is matured in French oak barrels, a good portion of them new each year, in cellars beneath the château.
A classic match for roast lamb, beef and game; decant young bottles and allow several years in the cellar for the wine to settle.
