Description
Château Certan de May is a small Pomerol estate on the plateau, in the middle of the appellation's finest ground.
The fuller name, Château Certan de May de Certan, points to a shared origin with Vieux Château Certan next door; the same plateau holds Pétrus a short walk away, and few vineyards in Bordeaux keep such company. The soils are clay over gravel with the iron-rich subsoil that Pomerol growers call crasse de fer, and Merlot dominates the planting, with Cabernet Franc and a little Cabernet Sauvignon. The holding runs to only a few hectares, worked by hand, and the wine has been made in a deliberately traditional manner for decades. Pomerol has no classification of its own, so reputation here rests entirely on what a grower puts in the bottle.
Good with duck, veal, mushroom dishes or a simply roasted bird; decant before serving, and pour at cellar temperature rather than warm.
