Description
From a property that has helped shape the reputation of the appellation.
Beaucastel lies at the northern edge of Chateauneuf-du-Pape near Courthezon, on the rounded galets roulés stones and sandy clay that define the appellation. The property has been held by the Perrin family since the early twentieth century, and is one of the few estates to plant all thirteen permitted varieties, with an unusually high proportion of Mourvedre. The vineyards are farmed biodynamically. The red is led by Grenache and Mourvedre with Syrah and Counoise, and the whole harvest passes through a brief flash heating before fermentation, a technique used here for generations. Ageing takes place in large old oak foudres rather than new barrels. Large formats age more slowly than standard bottles, which suits a red already built for the long haul.
The equivalent of four standard bottles; decant and serve at 16 to 18 degrees with roast lamb or game.
