Description

Château de Chamirey Mercurey Clos de la Maladière Rouge is a red Burgundy from a walled vineyard in Mercurey, in the Cote Chalonnaise south of Beaune.

Mercurey is the largest appellation of the Cote Chalonnaise, the stretch of Burgundy running south of the Cote de Beaune, and is planted mainly to Pinot Noir with a smaller share of Chardonnay. The hills here are higher and more broken than the Cote d'Or and the vineyards face in many directions, which is why individual sites matter. Chateau de Chamirey is one of the best known estates of the commune and is run by the Devillard family. A clos is a vineyard enclosed by a wall, a boundary usually drawn centuries ago because the site was thought worth marking out. The Pinot Noir is hand picked, destemmed and aged in oak barrels with restraint on new wood.

Serve at around 16 degrees with duck, mushroom dishes or roast pork; a short decant helps when the wine is young.
